I am neither more or less patriotic than the next man, but I have to record a sense of deep satisfaction in saying I have just drunk a bottle of English red wine which I both liked AND rated highly!. Neither has happened to me before. What's more, it's a Pinot Noir, which I had never expected to mature like this in England. The light mid-red colour gives off aromas of late summer fruits - raspberry, rosehip and cherry. The same lean 11% freshness wafts over the tongue but carries along a serious wave of tannins which almost demand to be given time to mature and develop. I had ordered the 2007, but that was out so this is the 2009. I am not disappointed, because maybe this will allow me to track this vintage for 2 or 3 years and see it grow. Delightful light, true pinot - at least as good as one or two similarly young NZ and Tasmanian pinots of the less acclaimed wineries. There is subtlety and even length in this wine - which goes way beyond my original expectation. I would hope a couple of years would add another half a point. Try it if you can - but it's light - and light years from those big burly Californians which I also love.
