Note: This wine was tasted blind at Franciscan Estate, Napa Valley as part of a tasting of wines from the Icon Estates portfolio (owned by Constellation): Appearance: medium to dark purple-red. Nose: ripe fruit first nose with red cherry and red plum. Oak treatment is non-intrusive. Palate: medium-high alcohol, generous fruit, medium to medium-high coating tannins and pleasant savoury oak. Quite good length. Conclusion: I did guess this was Merlot and felt confident – without trying to think about the properties in the Icon Estates portfolio – it couldn’t be from Chile or Australia (with Chile you'd expect more tomato-vine herbaceous green leaf notes and Australia doesn't make a huge amount of Merlot - at least as the large part of a blend or as single varietal - but I would have been looking for some eucalyptus or mint). more
