Appearance: dark purple-red. Nose: restrained black fruits (blackcurrant, blackberry) but still ripe and ‘sweet’-smelling. Oak is overt, but well-integrated producing a pleasant cocoa-like aroma. Quite complex with aeration. Palate: the restrained fruit quality is still there on the palate with a very big tannic structure throughout (huge, coating tannins, but quite ripe in expression). Medium acidity and ripe fruit support the tannins and balanced high alcohol here. Conclusion: apparently the Oakville Cabernet lots tend to produce this especially dark-fruit quality; whereas the Stag’s Leap AVA tends to produce more spice and slightly lighter fruit, at least for Robert Mondavi (Stag’s Leap is highly complex in itself as a region). This is very good and very-ageworthy. Compared with some Napa Cabs, it’s still relatively well-priced at $45 for the quality here. Drink 2010-2020. more
