What a change from Beaujolais all week! Deep red, almost cloudy with lees and other detritus by the time the bottle ended, but so rich and layered. Fortified fruitcake nose and preserved dark fruit layered with lovely vanilla oak and licorice swirling all over the palate in a very direct way, half way between freshness and maturity. Exceptional quality and value for around £11, and only lacking some of the leathery, decayed earth complexity for the full five. Priorat - always worth exploring - I expected it to be a bit ordinary at this price, but it was juicy and ready. very good.

Matched with Cochinillo Asado - organic roast suckling pig stuffed with juniper and rosemary with wild rocket and a Cox's Apple Sauce - this blend of Spanish and international varieties (Garnacha Tinta, Syrah, Cariñena and Cabernet Sauvignon) was a deliciously superb match hiting every spot.
