Appearance: deep gold to amber, delicate mousse. Nose: complex and layered nose – in the way Krug is immensely layered in its spectrum of flavours – with mature Pinot fruit and autolytic aromas (biscuits, breadiness, yeasty notes). But more simply, the wine shows concentrated white and even red fruits flavours with some wonderful savoury smells. Palate: strong Pinot-driven fruits, mellowed medium-high acidity, lovely length. Complex. Conclusion: superb. This wine seems ready to drink now – the 1996 will go much further with higher acidity – but will surely age well too. Top, top Champagne.
