Appearance: very dark purple to black. Nose: dark, spicy and slightly vegetal nose, but not the vegetal notes of a developing wine exactly. Restrained black cherry and other dark fruits with leather and savoy greens aromas. Palate: there is incredible fruit intensity on the palate that is not yet fully revealed on the nose with massive chewy tannins, lovely acidity and much brighter fruit all round. Alcohol is again very well integrated and the wine has predictably complex length. Conclusion: like the 1991 vintage, the 1999 is currently more restrained, but promises a huge amount in terms of elegance, concentration and staying power. Drink from 2019 onwards. It will keep. Very, very good. more September 24, 2008
