Appearance: dark purple, only very slight orange rim. Nose: a heady blend of dark fruits (blackberry, black cherry, Shiraz's blueberry signature) but with notes of mint, eucalyptus and tea coming to the fore, combined with very subtle oak treatment. Palate: super, super-concentrated fruit on the palate, but no 'fruit bomb' by any means thanks to vibrant acidity, integrated high tannins (these are particularly ripe and chewy in the 1998) and subtle alcohol. Very good length. Conclusion: this is clearly a great vintage of Grange. It seems to have greater and more sumptuous fruit concentration than either the 1983 or 1991 vintages - not that these are in any way lacking fruit. Will happily age until 2028 if not for longer. Superb.   September 24, 2008 | Link to this note
