Purchased at Total Wine in Gilbert AZ, $9.99, 13.5% alcohol. The label suggests “gimmick,” but Old Vines Carignan was enough to make me buy for a decent price. Also picked up the La Dif Viognier-Muscat. Dark ruby garnet color with a purple tint, narrow pink rim. Strawberry bubblegum & other candy fruit on the nose, reminiscent of Grenache. A vigorous swirl or two reveals more complexity, with brambly herb and earthy mineral notes. The palate brings loads of ripe berry juice – strawberry, raspberry, cherry & grape. Medium, fine tannins, focused acidity. Sweet red fruit and graphite make the finish the best part. Interesting wine – nothing strikes me as “Old Vine,” but there is still some gravitas to it. Kind of like a Beaujolais-Nouveau that could age a year or two. I tried it w/o food as a nightcap on a pretty lousy day; I can see it working with a LOT of food, almost in a white wine sort of way.

botto I have not had this one yet, but it sounds quite interesting for a summer red. Perhaps I'll put it on our wine bar next week. Does your local TW have free wine tasting on weekends?

bjwdad To be honest, I don't know, Nico. They probably do.
