I am pleased to have got six of these at a Bruce-like discount of just £5.99 for a 2000 Gran Reserva. It's from Navarre not Rioja, but the lavish oaking means that it is very reminiscent of the more famous region, despite being merlot-rich. Long smooth vanilla notes dominate both nose and taste, with a hint of ageing around the deep red core of colour. The fruit on the palate reminds me of a mixed warm winter dessert puddding, with a sprinkling of sweet spices, but a proper backbone holds up and gives the wine the personality to work well with quite strong flavours. On it's own, given a chance, some nice leathery notes appear both in the nose and the finish. I wouldn't have found this if I hadn't been steered by a rep from a company I use quite often - fair is fair - sometimes they hype it up, but on this occasion I'm very grateful.

rckr1951 I'd be grateful also. I like a vanilla presence in a wine when done well, merlot included. The Armstrong Ridge had a vanilla backbeat that helped the fullness of the wine. Good review Ben.
