Review for Opus One, Oakville, Napa 1995

Appearance: medium purple-red, distinct orange rim. Nose: a much more developed version of the 2001 in some respects, but with brighter fruit to its core. First nose is immensely savoury with tea, leather, some mushroom notes (all indicating development), but with ripe black fruits emerging, as it were, in the middle of the wine. Oak-integration very good again. Palate: a core of bright fruit with further developed savoury flavours firmed up by slightly mellowing but a still pronounced large tannic structure, medium acidity, balanced high alcohol and superb length. Conclusion: 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot and 2% Malbec, the wine spent 18 months in new French oak and is just beginning to drink very well now. This is a superb wine that would benefit from some further ageing (that core of bright fruit will ensure it will survive very well for some time to come). Drink now or hold. A real rival to the 1992 Opus and possibly one that might surpass that vintage. more
