Appearance: very bright looking dark purple-red, clear rim. Nose: lots of plum and kirsch fruit (plums and cherries characterize the ‘Koonunga Hill nose’ in younger vintages), a little oak. Palate: lovely fruit, good acidity, impressive tannic structure (a cross between grainy and chewy tannins at present). Good length. Conclusion: this wine commemorates the commercial launch of Koonunga Hill in 1976 and will only be released to on-trade outlets. It’s very good and, if somehow you can wangle a restaurant out of a bottle, worth ageing a little too. September 24, 2008 | Link to this note
