It's been a while. What a nice wine to come back with. Complex blend with complex qualities from wonderful Priorat region. Balsamic nose with rich plums. It is beautifully balanced and stays fresh and alert despite all that 15% alcohol and mature fruit. It has deep oaky depths too, with spicy sweet chocolate definitely lurking, but playing second fiddle and kept onside by a graphite streak. 5 stars but then, it's a $30 wine - and with grilled lamb and roasted root veg it was really enjoyable.

Monastrell never quite does it for me, but having said that, this wine at approx £7 is reasonable value and would go with all sorts of everyday food. I am sure there are briliant monastrells out there - just not at this price in England. The brambly sweetness is too cloying for me, and I wish the Syrah was more pronounced and influential. There is a dose of vanilla with the fruit, but the balance in general isn't quite there, and the traces of spice don't add much either.

This has been my introduction to the tiny Corbieres-Boutenac appellation. I caught on to the ground-breaking Minervois La Liviniere special terroir a few years back, and now I can see this is another rising star. Or maybe it's risen already as this wine cost £25+. Wonderfully smooth and integrated tannins provide the starting point for this wine. The sweet dark fruit is prominent, nicely balanced by well-judged oak, but beneath that the essential dryness is elegant and long, with lovely hints of garrigue herbs and then spice right at the finish. Carignan has rarely tasted so good for me, and it will clearly last for years yet too. Finally - it was the most attractive deep, crystal clear dark red colour I've seen this year. Delightful but well muscled wine.

rckr1951 Well worth the price it would seem. The '09 vintage is surely stretching out early.

rckr1951 Is this a revisit to an old tasting. This happens to me and old notes and comments come with it. Welcome back.

I last tried this 2003 Medoc a year ago, and there is no improvement noticeable since my last note - in fact I was half a point less impressed. But it was under £10 which probably caused me to be more generous last time. Very enjoyable and still definitely 'ready' but not outstanding.

Deep red colour and an interesting nose containing sweet plum and some green vegetal notes. The wine isn't compex but it is grown up in the sense that age has allowed some oak and spice to blend fully into the quite sweet plummy fruit and keep it dry and snappy and lively in the mouth. It could go a year or two more yet, maybe. Very good alue at £6.50.

rckr1951 Very good value indeed. I don't drink this very much - so a question. Is the d'Abruzzo hit and miss at the entry level as I've been lead to believe or is quality pretty consistant across the board?

Lovely lingering Priorat which is improving with age. I bought this for about £12 in 2007, and it has to be worth more than double, maybe triple now in terms of quality and maturity. It is very dry with pronounced tannins and a strong graphite streak which mixes beautifully with the intense blackberry and dark plum fruit. There are further intriguing notes of cedar and spice to make up a complex package capable of taking on all sorts of rich and demanding foods. All the flavours last for several satisfying moments too. Good for another five years I would think.

rckr1951 Drool. I like older, relatively speaking, wines with a cedar profile to them.
