Lovely mix of colours: dark red-violet with burnt orange hints. In the nose, it starts with toast and clay aromas. Very intense black fruit. Becomes sweeter in the end, honey like. The palate notes a light body wine, with lively acidity and marked tannins. Fruit and chocolate are predominant. Overall, it is a balanced, fresh and crisp wine with a short ending. Good for drinking now. The wine was decanted before drinking, namely for airing the wine.

rckr1951 Interesting with the clay aromas coming first. Earthy notes for me are usually in the background. I'd like this I'm sure. Good review.

lilianarosa The wines from Ribatejo usually have a very strong earthy/dry nuts aroma, right from the beginning. This one is no exception. Portuguese wines are becoming easier to find in the US, maybe one day you'll find something from the region of Tejo :)

I bought a box of this wine three years ago, around 2,5€/bottle. Back then, it was really hard to drink: untamed tannins, unbalanced, dense, and with a lot of acidity. Today, it's way different. Gorgeous dark ruby colour, low luminosity. In the nose, it's still vibrant of red fruit, a hint of spice and some sweetness in the end. In the mouth, it is smooth, medium-light body, completely round tannins, and low acidity. You can mostly taste the fruit, some vanilla, and a bit of mineral. The ending is not very persistent. Overall, it was a good damn deal and it did age better than what I expected. Drink now.

After 10 years, half of which under my tutelage, I decided to open this bottle. Why not start 2011 with a wine I have anxiously waited for? The wine's a dark ruby/granada color, with a blood red rim. The nose begins with some pungent spices, followed by the wood and toast. The fruit comes later, black and deep. The chocolate comes last and stays. The palate is lovely and complex. Elegant and structured, with vivid, fresh fruit, ripe, on the berry side. Some dark chocolate in the mix, with toned down acidity but definitely still lively tannins. Well balanced, fills 3/4 mouth and keeps on giving after it's gone. The fruit, so vivid, so ripe disguises this 10 year old wine with 18 months in new French oak. Probably, one of the best Alentejo reds I ever had. Absolutely, drink now. Decant and it's good to go.

rckr1951 Good for you for waiting. I hit up 2001 earlier and have a couple of more to dig out this spring.

Grapefan What a delight to have waited so long and then have this get 20 out of 20.

This is a red green wine. The colour's a purplish and dark. Opaque. The nose is mostly a sweaty horse, with strong leather and salty notes. The fruit comes later. The palate is light, fresh, with vivid fruit. The acidity is... well... nothing like I ever tasted in any other type of wine: overwhelming and capable of annihilating any piece of fat in food. There's no ending, simply disappears.

airdiogo The notes on acidity and how it can annihilate the fat in food are very useful and I'll keep that in mind for my next red Vinho Verde.

moose Not nice, overall, but interesting to hear the issue of 'fat' and wine brought up again. Sweaty horse and salt makes an interesting combination too! Good note!

lilianarosa Red green wines are usually on the high acidity side, good for really fat, full of cream or cheese or both, dishes... You get the picture! :)

Citric and fresh nose. Hints of floral and mineral. Nonetheless, it is a close nose. Fresh palate with marked acidity. Fills half a mouth, and the alcohol does show a bit.
