Purchased at Whole Foods in Chandler AZ, $7.99, 13.5% alcohol. A dollar cheaper than the past two vintages! Medium cherry garnet color, slight fade at the rim. Red berry & cola aromas w/ underlying herb, oak & mineral. Ripe red berry on the palate, on medium tannins & juicy acidity. Nice wood & mineral strike on the mid-palate. All the parts blend nicely in the lengthy finish, with a hint of peppery spice & alcohol heat. A simple, straightforward wine that is delicious and a STEAL at $8!

Purchased at Whole Foods in Chandler AZ, $12.99, 13% alcohol. Merlot 75%, Cabernet Sauvignon 14%, Malbec 7%, Cabernet Franc 4%. Nice Right Bank Bordeaux cuvée. Dense, dark black cherry garnet color, narrow clear separation at the rim. Earthy, stemmy black fruit on the nose with hints of wood & granite. Blackberry & cassis juice on the palate, on smooth medium tannins & solid acidity. Warm & woody on the mid-palate, lots of red fruit & mineral in the finish. Yeah, that works!

Purchased at Whole Foods in Chandler AZ, $11.99, 14% alcohol. My first Bobal, and my first Utiel-Requena wine. Dense ruby garnet color w/ virtually no fade at the rim. Fresh, stemmy dark berry on the nose with some vanilla, spice, floral & mineral notes. Bold dark berry flavors & spice on clean, smooth medium tannins & decent acidity. Plenty of fruit throughout, some oak sneaks in on the mid-palate. Long, smooth & warm finish featuring dark fruit, wood & mineral. Personally, I could use a bit more acidity, but it’s still a solid wine, and a good introduction to the varietal AND the region!

A gift from my Army EOD son, which I am sharing with him - $28 on the website. 13.02% alcohol. Cabernet Sauvignon 75%, Petite Verdot 14%, Merlot 7%, Zinfandel 4%. A Bordeaux blend (with a California twist!), and all proceeds go to the EOD Warrior Foundation. There was a “sediment plug” in the neck of the bottle upon opening, easily dispersed. Dense, dark ruby garnet color with some fading near the rim. Big, rich Cabernet Sauvignon aromas – lots of very ripe (overripe?) blackberry & some blueberry. Plenty of oak & vanilla, too. Also VERY ripe on the palate, with copious black fruit & vanilla. The tannic structure seems a bit tired & dissipated, but the acidity is still vibrant. Woody note on the mid-palate, followed by more refined dark fruit & a nice mineral character. This is obviously VERY fine juice with excellent wine-making, but a little past its prime.

Purchased at Whole Foods in Chandler AZ, $7.99, 13.5% alcohol. Brilliant ruby garnet color, very narrow separation at the rim. Lots of dark berry on the nose with flinty mineral, vanilla & something floral. Ripe but tart black currant, plum & even a little cranberry on the palate. Refined, drying tannins & medium acidity. A touch of alcohol heat on the mid-palate, with mineral, dried fruit & oak. Young & very lively wine, fine to drink now or to hang onto for awhile. Great value!

Purchased at Whole Foods in Chandler AZ, $11.99, 13.5% alcohol. This meets France’s qualifications for an organic wine. Deep magenta ruby color, virtually no separation at the rim. Ripe & earthy blackberry, other dark berry & black pepper on the nose with plenty of herbal oak & mineral. Nice underlying notes of musty dank cellar & dark flowers. Ripe, rich & juicy blackberry & black raspberry fruit on the palate, on vibrant but smooth medium tannins. Good acidity at first, but it fades a bit later. LOTS of pepper & ripe fruit on the mid-palate. Berry & mineral on the medium finish. Acidity notwithstanding, this is a REALLY good wine, and ready to drink NOW. Ripe and delicious, fine value, too. Several varietals are allowed, even required, in a Corbières red wine, and I’m guessing that this one is largely Syrah, the dominant varietal. With perfect acidity, this is a 95 pt. wine – it’s THAT good!

Purchased at Whole Foods in Tempe AZ, $11.99, 13.8% alcohol. Medium ruby garnet color, gradual narrow fade toward the rim. Red currant on the nose with plenty of perfumy spice & oak. Slightly sweet red berry fruit on the palate, on smooth medium tannins & excellent acidity. Some alcohol heat on the mid-palate. A nice ripe dried fruit character develops into the finish; it closes out with more spice, oak & mineral. Perfect with a hearty spaghetti sauce. Fine value!

Purchased at Whole Foods in Tempe AZ, $8.99, 9% alcohol. Pale straw color with about a million tiny bubbles clinging to the side of the glass. Tart, effervescent lemon & citrus on the nose with watery mineral. Spritzy & yeasty on the palate, supported by “bigger” acidity than I expected. Solid citrus flavors & some mineral. Add the light carbonation and you have the near-perfect alcoholic citrus soda! Refreshing to say the least. Marvelous little wine.

Purchased at Fry’s Grocery Store in Tempe AZ, $6.99 (orig. $12.99), 13.5% alcohol. Merlot 95%, Cabernet Sauvignon 5%. Deep purple-garnet color, very narrow clear rim. Warm aromas of chocolate, blueberry, black cherry, oak, vanilla, dark flowers, spice & damp earth on the nose. Ripe but restrained dark berry & cherry juice on the palate on VERY smooth chocolate tannins. Berry flavors sweeten on the mid-palate, joined by plenty of oak character. A floral character returns in the lengthy, warm finish, along with fruit, spice & mineral. This took quite awhile to open up, and it’s worth it. Not quite as stellar as the 2011, but it sure is good, and it’s young, as well. At this price I need a few more bottles!

Purchased at Whole Foods in Chandler AZ, $9.99, 14% alcohol. Monastrell 40%, Syrah 40%, Cabernet Sauvignon 20%. Dark, vibrant ruby garnet color with very little separation at the rim. Deep cherry & red berry aromas on the nose, with some spice, wood & cigar box notes; also a hint of alcohol. Explosive & fleshy fruit on the palate, black cherry & other berry. Medium woody tannins, good acidity. Spice enters mid-palate; warm, clean, fruity finish with pleasant spice, wood & mineral notes. It took awhile to open up, and it’s still improving. Fine effort and should keep improving with some more age!
