Pouring a deep magenta, this rich Dao red has a nose with a juicy raisined-berry core surrounded by other aromas of anise, leather, moist earth and pepper. The medium-bodied palate has a moderate acidity and flavors of sweet cedar and leather, while the tannins are full and spicy and linger with the sweet raspberry fruit on the finish.

rckr1951 Either one of these sounds like it'd be good at the diner table.

TheWhiskerReview agreed, it seems like Touriga Nacional is very sweet-edged, kinda like Merlot. I would need something rich and spicy to balance that out

rckr1951 It makes a grrrrrreat Port that's for sure.

Pouring an inky magenta, this Duoro red has a dark nose with solid fruit woven tightly into an intense vegetal character- more aromas of black cherry, tar and anise. The palate does a complete 180, though, showing a big, sweet-cored fruitiness (like cooked red berries) with moderate acidity and rich, spicy tannins that linger on the moderate finish. I like the nose/palate flip from herbal to fruity tones but I'd rather see them integrated more smoothly, because in the end, that sweet fruit core is just not dry enough for me.

Pouring a deep red, this ripe and sunny red has a nose of leathery red licorice, ripe plum, cedar and cinnamon. The palate is med-full bodied with a mild acidity and sweet cedary tones joining the licorice and fruit. Tannins are mild while the wine gains a nice and welcome bit of earthiness on the logonberry flavored finish. Overall, not bad but a little too sweet and ripe in nature for me.

Pouring yellow, this breezy white wine has a delicate nose of lemon, fresh apricot, fresh herbs and ocean air. The palate is light-bodied with a racy acidity which helps balance out the vague, sweet viscosity- the apple and fresh herb flavors turning towards peach and minerals on the tart finish.

Pouring ruby, this nicely smoky and gravelly Merlot-based Bordeaux has an expressive nose of cassis, red licorice and potpourri- all three varietals in this displaying a little bit of their best character. The palate is full-bodied and tart with restrained fruit- more gravelly dust covering the solid cassis and dried berry flavors- while the rich and dense tannins linger on the minerally finish. Dried berries, dried flowers and dirty rocks... yea my kind of red wine for sure.

Pouring a tawny rimmed ruby, this perfumed wine has a big spice character atop its chocolate, leathery raspberry and mushroomy earth aromas. The palate has a somewhat austere fruit character- earthy flowers with some cherry and raspberry- but still balanced against the moderate acidity and light and silky tannins. More flavors of earth and chocolate covered flower petals on the mildly tannic finish. With this being my second Nebbiolo not made in the vast and expressive Barolo and Barbaresco styles, I have to say how impressed I am with this grape. I mean, it's not hard to be impressed by one of the most noble grapes out there, but as someone who's wants an earthy Pinot Noir but doesn't want to mess with overpriced Burgundy, this seems to be the most perfect substitute.

rckr1951 I happen to be a big fan of the Nebby myself.

Pouring clear, this delightful Napa SauvB has a rich and fragrant nose with creamy-leesy qualities atop the pineapple, peach and cooked artichoke aromas. The palate is medium-bodied- tropical fruit flavors accented by citrus and cooked veggies- with a solid acidity which lingers on the tart apricot finish. As I've said before about Napa SauvBs, not really my style. But with this quoted to me at $20, I can definitely justify spending that as opposed to the $25-$30+ some losers want for their comparatively flat juice.

rckr1951 Gulp - It's really hard for me to spend $20 on SB anyway and now you go and reccoment on!! They don't generally last long and...well hell KONO only costs $8 a bottle or so and I can live off that stuff. Oh well, I suppose I should broaden my scope with respect to the varietal a little bit.
2035 days ago

TheWhiskerReview lol yea I mean I'd still take my $20 over to New Zealand (or South Africa)... but I'm trying to review as objectively as possible, and this is good for what Napa can do as a SauvB region
2035 days ago

rckr1951 Have you tried Honing or Provenence? They also show well for Napa style SB's (Somehow that always sounds like a dirty word.)

Pouring yellow, this simple Italian quaffer has a nice touch of spicy minerality atop its citrussy-apple aromas. The palate is light in body with a lingering tartness and solid fruit- a return to the lemon and apple flavors. Not sure what price was quoted to me on this, but if you're paying more than $10 you're getting robbed!
