Does anyone buy wine online directly from the winery?
In Europe buying wine online directly from the winery is still very rare but in the US that is a growing trend. Does anyone buy wine online directly? What is your experience ? Comments

That is interesting. I wonder how many people ever even tried looking to buy wine directly from the winery. :)

Are there any European wineries which sell online?

Cortes de cima as an online shop at their site (of course) but I'm not aware of other people doing it in Europe.

There are a few online wine shops in the Valencia (Spain) area and if you search really hard, you can find very few wineries that have an online shop. When in the "neighbourhood" I buy wine directly from the winery, never have bought online from a winery though...

I'm sure waiting for our US based members to join the conversation and say if it's different on the other side of the pond. :)

Yes it is. I order monthly from wineries. De Loach, Frog's Leap, Andretti etc. I also order from several wine shops on line. Where I can though, I like to order from wineries because, with the middle man cut out, they receive the best profit margins that way.
Of course their prices need to correspond to the wine shops or it's a bad deal. There are times I order differently due to that fact. I like the relationships that grow out buying direct from the wineries also. There is a caviat to all this though. Each state has their own laws regarding shipping. Some, like my state, have restrictions on the amount of wine shipped directly from a winery and different laws on shipping from a wine shop. I can order no more than 3 bottles a month from a single winery, with wine shops that goes up a case or 2 (depends on their license). Their are several that don't care and will ship whatever you want - I like those guys the most.

Great answer Paul. Thank you!

As far as I know, prohibition-style Arizona regulations prohibit it. Thankfully we get a healthy variety of wines in our good stores.

Here in Georgia the limit is 20 cases, per year, per household; but the winery can ship only if it doesn't have a distributor in the state of GA. I never bought wine on-line, because I cannot be at home to sign the UPS or FedEx delivery.

Paul, that reminds me of when I need to find a hotel room in i.e. Lisbon, I check booking.com to see what the price level is, and then I contact the hotel directly, not looking for a cheaper deal, but as you say, just to make sure the hotel can receive the full profit margin.

in France it is quite popular: on line shops and wineries are doing well on the web !
In Spain they are 10 years backward, although they have very good internet wine shops..not in the habit of the consumer yet and no cheap and efficient software to develop sales on the net. Too much of a "branded" market maybe ! |
