Would a wine in box (plastic liner), aluminum can or bottle, plastic bottle or the Tetra Pak influence your decision to buy a wine?

No. Other than aluminum can, I've enjoyed wine from all of them!

Yes, the Italian tradition is still linked to the glass bottle... here there's no wine in aluminum cans or plastic box... only tetra pak as "Tavernello"... that is the fifth producer of wines in the world for quantity...but i think these wines are suitable
for canteens...I prefer meditating when i drink a wine... Nice

I usually buy wine in bottles and occasionally a Bag In Box (BiB). I've tried wine from both aluminum can and Tetra pak and it just feels weird. I might, however, be influenced by the look & feel of the package.
I have no idea how a wine evolves over the years if stored in a BiB but for wine to consume in a year or two this is a really interesting option for several reasons: - It's easier to enjoy a wine for more than one week since it's automatically sealed. - It's very practical for parties or big dinners where anyone can just get the wine out the box. - Shipping a BiB is much cheaper option than shipping a bottle. The weight of a BiB is considerably less than the weight of a bottle for the same quantity of wine. I wish producers would put better wines on BiBs to remove the bad image that it still has. That would make more people enjoy different packaging options.

We are pondering whether to add a BIB to our range, and keep putting it off. Our main concern is with the limited shelf life of BIBs. Even if you put a good wine in the BIB, it will oxidize and deteriorate over time much quicker than if the same wine had been put in a bottle with a cork closure.
To ensure the quality of the wine, it is imperative for a producer to write the bottling date, and the suggested 'use by' date on a BIB.

I think that the "use by" date concept it something people are not used to in the world of wine. However, a BiB has plenty of space to actually add some simple yet visible information explaining why BiBs can be a good thing. I would really like to see a middle range (5 to 15 euros / dollars) wine using a BiB.

I think that you'll this interesting. There are several wines that have been reported on that are getting good - very good reviews in some trade magazines. For instance Black Box 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles got an 87 in Wine Spectator. It comes in a 3L package.
There are several others. Bota Box, Carlo Rossi, Wine Cube, Killer Juice even Fish Eye are doing boxes. Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay seem to be the biggest right now. Coppola is doing a Blanc de Blanc in pink aluminum cans. DeLoach is doing a 10L Pinot Noir in a biodegradable BiB that they say keeps good for up to 8 weeks. Boisset released Momesin Beaujolais Grande Reserve in an aluminum bottle. It has a dot that changes color when it's cool enough - alah Coors beer. 3 Thieves does the Tetra Pak thing with Cabby, Chard, Merlot, Sangria and Pinot Grigio. The problem with the Tetra Pak is that it isn't very green with paper, plastic and aluminum layers. Lastly Yellow Jersey does Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc from Vin de Pays d'Oc. Some thing to mull over. Paul

Andre, I'm pretty sure that VERY few wines packaged in BiB or the other formats is allowed much time to mature. It seems to be marketed as "drink it now" wine, and that's wise. "Box wine" in years past meant Franzia - BLECH - now it means something completely different, and I'm all for it!

I agree with that. More people want the convenience of the BiB with the quality of better wines!

Bruce - Is BLECH the same as FRAT only on the other end of the spectrum? I hope for the industry's sake that this helps. It would be good for all those left over grapes from the '09 vintage. The farmers will be the most affected as their prices have dropped (Canada especially) or the product has not been sold at all (New Zealand and USA especially). I've been surprised at the coverage in the 2-3 months and I asked the question!

Just to add, Cortes, BIB portions of the market by volume at one of the big Supermarket chains in france has increased the BIB segment of shelf-space from 9% three years ago, to 30% last year. In a market where wine consumption is, at best, static, this sort of observation is pretty eye-opening....
