Quinta do Carmo

About Quinta do Carmo

"Quinta do Carmo is part of the Alentejan tradition, with a vineyard of 150 hectares and a total area of more than 1,000 hectares that still includes olive trees, cork oak trees and forests.
At the end of the 17th century, Don Joao IV built a baroque-style mansion with a chapel dedicated to Notre Dame do Carmo. Today, nothing remains of the royal property or the life at court except, perhaps, the “noblesse” of Quinta do Carmo wines.
In the 1980’s, although the wines were well-known throughout Portugal, the 70-hectare vineyard was in decline. In 1992, Domaines Barons de Rothschild-Lafite took over Quintal do Carmo from the Bastos family, with the aim of bringing about its renaissance. The primary goal was to combine traditional Alentejo winemaking techniques with the skill and expertise of the DBR teams and, secondly, to blend the character of traditional, indigenous grapes with new varieties, in order to enhance the complexity and elegance of the wines and gain international recognition.
In the vineyard, the choice of soils and the specific microclimate meant that there was no need to use any particular irrigation technique. However, the new plan did involve renewing vines and planting new plots, the introduction of wire training for all the vines and a systematic reduction of yields. International grape varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah were blended with the region’s traditional grapes and there was major investment in the Herdade das Carvalhas winery that included a new cellar, the purchase of stainless steel vats with temperature control and pneumatic presses.
Today, Quinta do Carmo is directed by DBR-Lafite and their new partner Comandador José Berardo. The Quinta now has 150 hectares of vines that are gradually reaching maturity and the efforts to improve quality are paying dividends. Recent vintages have produced unique wines that are a blend of terroir and wine-making skill."
