The Abadía Retuerta Estate occupies over 700 hectares of terrain, and its name comes from the combination of two words that define and describe the territory: Rívula (river bank) and Torta (twisting, winding).
Over 204 hectares of vineyards are spread out on hillsides ranging in altitude from a maximum 850 metres down to the southern bank of the Duero River. We have a wide variety of soils, with representations of most of the world's best varieties, and state-of-the-art technology (meteorological stations, anti-frost towers, etc.)
The rest of the estate is comprised of the winery, 12th century abbey, a farm, forest and bush.
The vineyards cover 204 ha of the total 700 ha area of the estate. All the vines are trained onto trellises with modern systems to measure and control hydric stress (soil hygrometers, trunk expansion, leaf water potential indicators, etc.) . In order to ensure the grape harvest in an area where spring frosts are frequently devastating, effective anti-frost towers have been installed. Production is regulated each year through green pruning and cluster thinning.
75% of the estate is planted with Tempranillo, 20% is Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% is Merlot and a small amount of Syrah and Petit Verdot. Before the harvest, over 2,000 analyses are made in order to determine the quality of the grapes on each plot. The analysis data includes weighing 100 grapes (an indicator of proper hydric stress control in the plant), colour progression and tannins (phenolic ripeness monitoring), as well as the classic parameters of acidity and alcohol level measurements.
Designed by famous French enologist, Pascal Delbeck, in 1996, Abadía Retuerta winery is a surprising combination of tradition and modernity, recognized as one of the most advances wineries in Europe.
It covers an area of 10,000 m2 with limited wine production, as quality is preferred to quantity.
