The supplier (Slurp Wines) rang me to say they were substituting this for a slightly cheaper wine I had requested. I said ok, obviously, and had a little bit of luck, because this wine (under £10) is a delight, and a wonderful way to start tipping my hat to the Grenache grape. I'm ashamed to say it's only my second Rose of the year, and I should have had more based on this. Any wine which can ooze strawberry flavour at both start and finish, but still have crisp acidic backbone and a little mineral snap as well is achieving a great balance. This would have been great with a mixed buffet too, although we enjoyed it with Chicken and herb dumplings. Sitting with the last glass, I can detect lots of rose petal translated into a taste. Very good. We both thought it tasted a good £5 better than we paid - isn't that a nice feeling! 50% Grenache - blended cleverly.

Château d'Aqueria Lirac Blanc 2009white

The last thing I expected this to be was 'direct', but it is. A 5 grape blend is unusual, but maybe not so much in the south of France. Flowers and fruit are central to this, once the interesting green and gold flows invitingly into the glass. It's 40% Grenache Blanc, which is why I chose it, and once again the dominant grape has not let me down. When ice cold (straight from the fridge) we got pears in the nose, but 15 mins later apricots had taken over, with pollen-laden white flowers adding another dimension. The fruit is very direct and bright and refreshing, but has some depth as well, with a hint of banana skin (pleasantly) wafting in along the line somewhere. It all balances very well, despite very limited acidity, and feels simply and confidently unified in the mouth. Wish I could send a bottle to Diogo - I think you'd enjoy this one with no after-effects. Conclusion: I really like these white blends - in this case Bouboulenc, Clairette, Rousanne and Viognier all play their part. (According to Berry Brothers, their reds are even better!). Only Marsanne is missing!

Pleasant deep red on the eye, with nice mixed berries and a waft of perfumed herbs on the nose. Sweet full berry flavours fill the mouth but are partly dried and stretched out by a crisp streak of southern french dry vegetation, and some vibrant acidity. The dominant grenache is particularly full of ripeness, with the syrah supporting effectively and helping some nice tannins to underpin the overall effect. Very good wine at a reasonable price.

Altovinum Evodia Old Vines Garnacha 2008red

It's September 24 - International Grenache Day!!
Purchased at BevMo! in Chandler AZ, $8.99, 14% alcohol, 100% Old Vines Garnacha. Purple-black color, barely discernible ring. Blackberry & cassis on the nose with hints of toasty oak, camphor and earthy pencil lead. Plenty of juice on the palate - blackberry, cherry & cassis. Sweet mineral note, too. Mid-palate features focused acidity along with noticeable heat. Short finish with pepper and mineral. Nice start, but the body is thin and the alcohol too high. Balance is lacking, perhaps it will age?

Perrin & Fils Vinsobres "Les Cornuds" 2008red

Medium ruby at the centre getting lighter towards the rim. A big kick of white pepper on the nose and that lovely Southern French garrigue of wild flowers and herbs in the heat. The palate is positively bursting initially with red and black fruit, all nicely rounded in the mouth with the spice them coming to the front. The tannins are there but not too obvious whereas the acidity is positively mouth watering. This is worthy of cellaring to tame the acidity. I guess the wine shows well the fruit of the Grenache combined with the spice of the Syrah.

This has an early 80's atmosphere to it. If I can follow Gabriella's line here this was rockin' from the start. In the glass this was a brilliant medium garnet with a slight ring. Violets and delphiniums, plums, cherries and spice, bright. Interestingly NO oak. The palate gets hit with red fruits, that funky sugar cookie spice that I can never remember the name of, wood notes and vanilla. This is fun to drink, unfortunately there were too many of us. Paul

Very good. Has great color, sort of garnet with dark streaks floating here and there. Great nose of a patch of blackberries on a hot day, earthy tones, spice with oak. On the tongue the tannins are rounded and gripping and showcase the fruit well. The blackberry, anise and dark cherry are well balanced and have a little punch added to them due to good acidity, minerality and spice. It's a good food wine - pork tenderloin, BBQ'd chicken and beef. Drink now through 2012. Paul

Dark raspberry nose to this with a lovely complexity really fun to keep your nose in the glass. In the mouth the wine is a bit heated, but has some really lovely fruit with a nicely balanced acidity. Touch of raisen at the finish makes me sad, as I loved the acidity and fresh fruit in the nose, but not bad. Fine tannins that sit in the distance that make me think this is a wine for now. Not a bad start to #grenache day, though just the beginning!

d'Arenberg The Derelict Vineyard Grenache 2006red

moose has reviewed the d'Arenberg The Derelict Vineyard Grenache 2006 4.5 /5

This is an impact wine in every way, from the deep rich red colour to the interesting, confusing nose. Half way through the first lungful you get bright young fruit with some new oakiness - but by the time you've breathed in again there are dark, dry french-type garrigue and herb aromas coated in cherry and sweet peppers. The weight is unmissable, despite this feeling young, and the more you drink, and the wine opens up, the more it feels French and the less it feels fruity antipodean. By the end it is having a really impressive full-on grenache effect - but I have surely done it again and opened it too early. I thought 5 years was enough for this. There are further complexities to follow, and the concentrated spice which develops in the wine now will mellow and there is a good chance that flowers will blossom and game will spring out - if that's the right term! Oh yes ... 15.5%! May eventually be justified, but I think there's a bit of showing off there. Loved it, though. And I've just fallen over,

Fresh nose with violets, and fresh blackberries, really quite perfumy! In the mouth a wine with a nice softness. Lovely black fruit, and more of that floral perfume. Delicate with a nice streak of fresh acidity. Fine tannins that are more of an after thought than anything else. A pretty wine, something worth sipping with friends as dinner begins to come together.

Touch of funk on this with nice freshly cracked black pepper, curry? and other interesting treats. In the mouth this wine is lush, seriously tasty with a bit of drying tannins which take away from the over all lush character. Note some wood here, some place, but really the fruit is pure. If only the tannins did not dry out the front palate this wine would be lovely. That said it's definitely drinkable and I think a few slices of steak might help with them tannins! :)

Whew. This was very good and looks like it will go another 3-5 years in the cellar. There is a slight amber hue to the ring around the dark ruby juice. The nose knows. After sitting in the glass for 15 mins. following a 30 minute bottle opening this finally opens to lush blackberry, dark currant, a slight oak nuance, cassis and cedar. On the palate this the fruit follows with a wonderful tannic structure and great balance acidity to highlight the earthy and herbal notes. Fabulous wine and much more than I expected. Paul
