Sights and observations from Yountville’s Festival of Lights
Last Friday, when many were out looking for amazing deals on Black Friday, we made our way up to Yountville for the kick-off of the annual Festival of Lights. Having not been in years past, we were not quite sure what to expect. We did know there would be plenty of food, wine and other... (more)

[This picture was taken by San Francisco Chronicle staff photographer Kurt Rogers, at the Wine Institute a few years ago, when the W.I. was honoring wine iconoclasts. Lou is in the front row, third from the left.] There are very few nonagenarians living in the world among us… Fewer within... (more)

Robert Parker interrupts my interview with Janet Myers of Mt Veeder Winery !!
After attending the acclaimed wine critic Robert Parker's Napa based tasting of 20 of the top 2005 Bordeaux wines (all 1st growths plus the Cheval Blanc and Pavie crowd), I attended a private Dinner at Press restaurant in St. Helena in honor of Parker. Although the place was packed (with Napa's... (more)

Biodynamic Elixir
This is what GT is all about… this is where we came from. Seeing wineries as more than wine… more like energy elixir palaces.. LOL. Seriously tho, check out what Brad and Angelina just bought over at Chateau Val Joanis. It’s a winery, but it also has a vegetable and herb garden,... (more)

Chiarello’s Bottega restaurant to open December 5th
On Wednesday we noticed the blinders around Chef Michael Chiarello’s long-awaited Yountville restaurant, Bottega, had come down and there was a flurry of activity. Yesterday (Thanksgiving) was much quieter, but the activity level was once again quite high this morning–and for good... (more)

Turkey Day & Thanksgiving
Thoughts on this day… I’m thankful for the World Wide Web. It’s made our lives so immediate; and if one writes, it’s instantaneous publishing. I’m thankful for my visit to Wente Vineyards for a delightful lunch there this past September, when I was able to shoot... (more)

Sumptuous Thanksgiving Wines ~ In the Red Wine Zone
The wines I’m going to mention in this posting will be from ones that I know well and always enjoy. The true fun will be pairing them with my Williams-Sonoma Thanksgiving recipe book (Simon-Schuster), again. I just found this book, and am really looking forward to Wednesday! When Jose and... (more)

COPIA is closed, many Napans want it replaced with a movie theater
We should have know something big was up when we took the little one out for a stroll over the weekend through Oxbow Public Market (partially to check out the new Hog Island Oyster Co. setup) and out over to COPIA. You see, the little guy loves the long flowing water fountain that leads the way... (more)

A Portuguese Passage to India and some Cricket
I was fortunate to be part of the group of 14 adventurous Portuguese winemakers who travelled to India in November, on our first forage into this promising new market. New Delhi, Goa and Mumbai were the venues of the biggest ever tastings of Portuguese wines ever to be shown in India.... (more)

Yates Family Vineyard, Mount Veeder Appellation, Napa
Michael and Lynn Yates and their daughters Whitney and Mary operate the 35 acre Yates family vineyard in Mount Veeder, Napa Valley. I tasted their 2005 Cheval, a small production (98 cases, $45) of 100% Cabernet Franc of exceptional balance and finesse, with forward red fruit tamed by evident... (more)
